Wally Amos. Today, his name is a household word wherever his cookies precede him, and that´s in Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the United States, and Canada. A top-notch promoter at heart, Amos is constantly traveling, not only to promote his cookies, but also to speak on college campuses about the secrets of his success... and his favorite charity, Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA). He was a member of the President´s Private Sector Initiatives group, and he´s written an autobiography, The Famous Amos Story: The Face That Launched a Thousand Chips. He was born in Tallahassee, Florida, and reared, until he was 12, primarily by his mother, Ruby, a strict disciplinarian. Then, the break-up of his home sent him to New York City to live with his Aunt Della. She was the first person to make chocolate chip cookies for him, and it was that introduction which ultimately led to the creation of his famous cookies. As a teenager, he attended a New York City trade school, with an apprenticeship at a local hotel as a cook. Disenchanted, he quit six months prior to graduation and joined the Air Force. After a four-year stint, he returned to New York City, working first at Saks Fifth Avenue and later at The William Morris Agency. In both instances, he started as low man on the totem pole and by dint of hard work, climbed rapidly. In the 14 years he spent, first as a talent agent for the Morris Agency and later on his own as a personal manager of show business talent, he was always on the look-out for a superstar to represent. And then, he finally found one - the Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookie. Now, with stores located both domestically and internationally, the Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookie Corporation of Van Nuys, California, no longer counts its daily production in pounds of cookies, but in tons. 1. By the readers´ favorite award-winning author, Barbara Oliverio. Barbara´s ´´Love on the Lido Deck´´ was recently made into a Hallmark Channel Movie.Annalise Fontana is feeling blue with no job, no boyfriend, and packed among her childhood memories in her parents´ home. What could be more enticing than the opportunity to serve as a companion to her elderly Auntie Lil on a senior citizens’ tour of China (with a side trip to Singapore)? She digs out her passport and packs her bags and assumes that she’s in for a tranquil Jane Austenesque journey. Nothing could be further from the truth as the trip takes a turn before they even leave the country. What follows is a lively journey with a cast of quirky travel companions who are anything but dull. The Fontana girls immediately fit in to the festive group. While visiting heart-stopping sights, Annalise also has her heart begin pounding faster as she meets a number of charming young men. But who is the mysterious, brooding stranger who seems to pop up on the streets of Singapore, in Beijing’s Forbidden City, and stays on her mind at the Great Wall of China? 1. Language: English. A bartender is the manager of moods, the master of mixology. Certain scenarios are played out over and over again in bars everywhere. The questions are basically the same; only the details vary: What´s in a true Singapore Sling? How long has the Martini been around? What´s the difference between a Fix and a Fizz? What we´ve learned (or failed to learn) to compete globally Why are some companies highly successful with their lean Six Sigma performance management initiatives, while most are not? Best Practices in Lean Six Sigma Process Improvement shows readers how to get process improvement going, and keep it going for many years. The key is an expended concentration on what are most important to customers, namely quality, response time, flexibility, and value. The author provides readers with valuable benchmarks and best-practice models based on results from his own extensive, long-ranging research, including hard data from 1,200 companies throughout the world. Richard J. Schonberger (Bellevue, WA) is President of Schonberger Production and has been awarded both the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing as well as the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)´s Production and Inventory Control Award. Praise for Best Practices in Lean Six Sigma Process Improvement ´´Dr. Schonberger reveals why successful companies lose their way on their continuous improvement journey and the magic formula for achieving rapid continuous improvement. This is a must-read for those who must develop or broaden their competitive advantage.´´ David L. Schlotterbeck, CEO of Clinical and Medical Products, Cardinal Health ´´With a stature built on decades of research, reading, and reporting, Schonberger in this book sets about one of his favorite routines: debunking what most consider to be established truths; questioning questionable practices, and offering valuable new insights. With all his opinions solidly backed up with research data, this provocative read will undoubtedly contribute new angles to the worldwide discourse on operations improvement.´´ Koot Pieterse, Professor, Lean Manufacturing Group, Business School, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. ´´Finally, a true thought leader, Dick Schonberger, has stepped forward to give clarity to why companies either get better or plateau. Continuous improvement has been misunderstood over the years because most leaders have not fully understood the benefits and shortcomings of the individual methodologies, how they should fit together and how they are best used to engage every associate. The future clearly belongs to those who understand how to organize the pieces effectively into a robust systematic approach.´´ Craig Long, Vice President, Quality & Six Sigma, Milliken & Company Best Practices in Lean Six Sigma Process Improvement reveals how to refocus lean/six sigma processes on what author Richard Schonberger-world-renowned process improvement pioneer-calls ´´the Golden Goals´´: better quality, quicker response, greater flexibility, and higher value-all with a focus on the universal wants and needs of customers. This excellent step-by-step manual shows how it can be done, employing the success stories of over 100 companies including Apple, Illinois Tool Works, Dell, Inc., Wal-Mart, and General Dynamics, along with SKF of Sweden, Honda of Japan, and Flextronics of Singapore, all of which have established themselves as the new, global ´´Kings of Lean,´´ surpassing even Toyota in long-term improvement.
